While most 3D printed construction projects we cover rely on cement-based materials to build structures layer by layer, a Dutch company is proposing an alternative method that uses bio-based composites to print compact homes and office spaces. The company, Silva.builders, recently erected its first official build: a 3D printed break shelter for Qbuzz bus drivers in the town of Oosterwolde, southwest of Groningen.

Like other construction 3D printing companies, Silva.builders is interested in providing a more sustainable alternative to conventional building processes, while also addressing the need for more affordable housing. Unlike many other companies in the growing segment, however, Silva.builders is leveraging a different material source: a bio-based composite made up of recycled plastic and natural fibers. The material, the company emphasizes, is itself fully recyclable and meets building requirements for fire safety and UV resistance.

The company’s first finished building in Oosterwolde, made from this sustainable material, was reportedly printed in just a few days and will function both as a shelter and as a pilot project for the company’s 3D printing solution. Located in Natura 2000, a protected natural area, the 3D printed structure also conforms to the sustainability requirements of the zone.

In terms of building design, Silva.builders has created a selection of pre-designed models that come with a variety of personalization options. For example, it has office space models and small living models ideal for those looking for a minimalist lifestyle. “We combine the power of digital manufacturing with circular material use and add the design of top architects,” explains Gerard van der Hoeven, Founder of Silva.builders. “This allows us to create buildings that are ready for the future.” Of course, customers can also choose to design their own homes. In all cases, the Silva.builders team starts with a consultation and a feasibility check at the location to make sure that the required zoning, access and utilities are in place.

The construction itself is done at Silva.builders site, where a robotic 3D printer makes pre-fab components, which are then transported to the final location and assembled. “This technology allows us to efficiently produce high-quality, circular spaces, significantly reducing costs and lead times,” the company says. “The silva robot operates around the clock, requiring minimal human intervention, ensuring both cost-efficiency and speed.
