SCD, a global leader in defense technology specializing in the development and manufacture of a wide range of cooled and uncooled infrared detectors and high-power laser diodes, announces significant new
order for its cutting-edge Crane MWIR detector. The company has received an order for hundreds of units of the Crane, the world’s first 5M/5µm format Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) detector, for integration into missile warning systems (MWS) for airborne applications from a leading integrator.
The Crane detector offers unparalleled capabilities for airborne self-protection suites, enabling unprecedented detection and identification of threats at extended ranges. This groundbreaking device combines an exceptional 5-megapixel resolution in a 2560×2048 format with an industry-leading 5μm pixel pitch, setting new standards in the field.
Based on SCD’s established XBn technology and Hot Full Midwave (HFM), the Crane operates efficiently at 150K or 120K, delivering superior image quality while maintaining compact size, weight, and power consumption.
Customers benefit from enhanced mission effectiveness and operational flexibility with the Crane’s key features. Its high sensitivity, characterized by low readout noise, low dark current, and high quantum efficiency, allows for superior performance in challenging environmental conditions. The detector’s frame rates of up to 140 Hz in full frame provide smooth and detailed imagery even in dynamic scenarios, crucial for tracking fast-moving threats. Additionally, its compact integrated detector dewar cooler assembly (IDDCA) contributes to a low SWaP profile, making it ideal for integration into various airborne platforms.
“This order underscores the growing demand for advanced MWIR technology in airborne self-protection systems,” said Shai Fishbein, VP of Business Development & Marketing at SCD. “The Crane’s unique combination of high resolution and low SWaP characteristics enables our customers to achieve superior threat detection and tracking capabilities. This significantly enhances aircraft survivability by providing unparalleled situational awareness and early threat detection, allowing aircrews to respond with greater precision and effectiveness in complex operational environments. As global threats are constantly increasing, our leading IR solutions, ranging from high-end to mass distribution units, are drawing significant interest worldwide.”
