Samsung is preparing its entrance into the extended reality (XR) market with imminent plans to reveal its platform and AR glasses.
The South Korean tech giant’s forthcoming device is anticipated to be significantly lighter and more affordable than Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Sources suggest the AR glasses will weigh approximately 50g and sport a conventional glasses or sunglasses design.
The device, expected to be revealed alongside the Galaxy S25 at its next “Galaxy Unpacked” event, is expected to incorporate advanced features including payment capabilities, gesture recognition, and AI-powered facial recognition technology.
Samsung has been collaborating with Google and Qualcomm on this project since February 2022, leveraging their expertise in software and hardware respectively.
For those that can’t wait for more details, Samsung reportedly plans to introduce the XR platform for the AR glasses later this month—ahead of the prototype’s public debut.
This timeframe aligns with comments made by Roh Tae-moon, Head of Mobile eXperience at Samsung, during the Galaxy Z Fold 6 & Flip 6 Unpacked event in Paris this July, where he confirmed plans to launch the XR platform within the year.
Industry analysts predict the official product launch will take place in Q3 2025. As part of its push into the XR market, Samsung is expected to strengthen its XR-related divisions through strategic recruitment and leadership appointments in an upcoming organisational restructure this week.
The timing appears opportune, as market research firm Omdia estimates the global spatial computing market to reach $4.5 billion this year, with projections suggesting it will surpass $10 billion by 2029, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18%.
While unconfirmed, the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event – where it’s likely we’ll see the company’s AR glasses alongside the S25 series – is expected to be held on 22nd January.
