Nokia boosts Industry 4.0 with new MX Industrial Edge applications

Nokia is expanding its Industry 4.0 ecosystem with the launch of six new applications on MX Industrial Edge (MXIE).

Stephan Litjens, VP, Enterprise Campus Edge at Nokia, said: “Enterprises require intelligent, secure, and scalable solutions to navigate the complexities of digital transformation and introduce use cases that will deliver concrete benefits.

“The expansion of industrial applications deployed on MXIE underscores Nokia’s commitment to fostering an open and interoperable industrial edge ecosystem. With our expanded portfolio of industrial edge applications, we are enabling businesses to accelerate their digitalisation journey while ensuring quality, safety and security, efficiency, and sustainability.”

Enterprises operating in asset-intensive industries such as ports, mining, and manufacturing often face challenges in leveraging the value of real-time operational technology (OT) data to achieve their digitalisation goals.

The newly-launched Nokia MXIE Industry 4.0 applications utilise various enabling technologies – including machine and process control, video analytics and AI, environmental sensing, industrial connectivity, and network security – to provide unique industrial use cases:

  • Industrial DataOps: The Prosys OPC UA Forge application offers a single point of access for collecting data from diverse industrial assets. Particularly beneficial in brownfield deployments, this app facilitates structured data organisation using OPC UA information modelling, ensuring interoperability across different manufacturers and system generations. This simplifies data management and unlocks valuable insights for improved operational efficiency.
  • Machine automation: Bosch Rexroth’s ctrlX OS, an operating system designed for industrial automation, will now run on MXIE. This integration provides a powerful combination, offering seamless integration of machines, data visualisation, process automation, and secure communication across various industrial use cases. When combined with Bosch Rexroth’s ctrlX CORE control platform, it enables real-time control of machinery, leading to enhanced precision and productivity.
  • AI-powered quality inspection: SwitchON DeepInspect employs high-precision AI models to significantly reduce defects, lower inspection costs, and optimise manufacturing processes. By automating and improving the accuracy of quality checks, businesses can ensure higher product standards and reduce waste.
  • Advanced video analytics for safety & automation: Ipsotek VISuite enhances situational awareness through precise object tracking and AI-powered automation. This leads to improved worker safety by monitoring potentially hazardous situations and optimising production monitoring for greater efficiency.
  • Workplace safety and environmental monitoring: SmartCone’s HeatGuardian solution provides real-time worker heat stress monitoring. This crucial application ensures workplace safety in various and often challenging environmental conditions, helping to prevent heat-related incidents and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • OT, IoT, and CPS security: Purpose-built for complex industrial, commercial, and critical infrastructure environments, the Nozomi Networks Platform, including Guardian sensors, leverages AI to deliver real-time asset visibility, threat detection, and vulnerability management. This proactive approach minimises cyber risk and maximises operational resilience, safeguarding critical industrial systems.

With these new applications, enterprises can now harness real-time insights to optimise their operations, enhance worker safety, and ensure compliance with crucial sustainability and security standards. This expansion of Nokia’s industrial application ecosystem on the MXIE platform is a step forward in enabling the digital transformation of asset-intensive industries.
