DJI Neo – How to Access Internal Storage (Step-by-Step Guide)

The DJI Neo is a fantastic starter drone and an all-around fun drone for seasoned drone owners.

One of the more notable aspects is that the Neo does not need a phone or remote controller to fly. You can fly the Neo by simply selecting an automated flight mode using the mode button on the top.

Something else notable about the DJI Neo is that it does not have a removable Micro SD Card, as most DJI drones do. All media recorded by the DJI Neo is stored internally.

This comprehensive guide, with screenshots, will walk through downloading photos and videos if using:

  • A Windows PC or a Mac
  • A DJI RC-N3/RC-N2 or
  • The DJI Quick Transfer feature

Downloading Photos & Videos

As mentioned, the DJI Neo has no removable SD Card. All media is stored on 22GB internal storage. Although there is this limitation, thankfully content saved to the Neo can be accessed using various methods.

These methods are:

  • Downloading/transferring files to a PC or Mac using the direct connect method
  • Directly copying files to your Smartphone while connected to a DJI RC-N3 or RC-N2
  • The Quick Transfer Feature

STEP 1: Connect a USB to USB-C cable to your Windows PC, plugging the USB side into an empty USB slot on your Windows PC.

STEP 2: While the Neo is off, plug the USB-C end into the Neo.

STEP 3: Your Windows PC should recognize the Neo internal storage in the background. I previously labeled my Neo Internal Storage as NeoInternal.

Note: Like DJIs newest line of drones, there is no need to power on the Neo, as when it connects to the Mac via USB-C, the internal storage is accessible.

STEP 4: Windows/File Explorer may automatically launch. If it does not, open your Windows/File Explorer by right-clicking on the Windows icon on the bottom of your PC and choosing File Explorer.

STEP 5: After opening your File Explorer, you should see your Neo internal drive on the left-hand side.

As mentioned, I previously named mine NeoInternal to easily distinguish it from the drives and drones I connect to my PC regularly.

STEP 6: You will see its contents after clicking on your Neo Internal Storage.

STEP 7: Selecting the DCIM folder will bring you to the directory where your media is stored. DJI standard seems to be the DJI_001 directory. Yours may be different.

STEP 8: To copy all of the files into the directory of your choice on your PC, you can right-click the DJI_001 directory and choose COPY.

Alternatively, you can click and choose what files you’d like to copy and then move to STEP 9.

STEP 9: To paste the files or directory into your folder/directory of choice, navigate through the Explorer Window, locate the directory you’d like to copy to, open the directory, and then right-click and PASTE into said location.

Note: Like DJIs newest line of drones, there is no need to power on the Neo, as when it connects to the Mac via USB-C, the internal storage is accessible.

STEP 4: Double-click the storage drive icon on your Desktop. A Mac Finder window will open, showing you the contents of the internal storage.

STEP 5: To access your Neo’s pictures or videos, double-click the DCIM folder.

STEP 6: Next, double-click the DJI_001 directory (yours may be different). You will find your DNG (RAW), JPEG, and MP4 files.

STEP 7: To copy all of the files into the directory of your choice on your Mac, you can right-click the DJI_001 directory and choose COPY.

You can also pick and choose what files you’d like to copy.

Downloading using the DJI RC-N3 or RC-N2

If you purchased the DJI Neo RC-N3 Combo or are using a previously purchased DJI RC-N2, you can copy files directly to your smart device while connected to the DJI Fly app.

We mentioned the DJI RC-N3 or RC-N2 as the controller you can use to copy Neo files. However, photos and videos cannot currently be copied from the Neo to the DJI RC 2 remote controller.

The files from the DJI Neo are copied directly to your Android or iOS smartphone or device through the DJI Fly app.

To download files directly to your Android or iOS smartphone or device while in the DJI Fly app:

STEP 1: While connected to the powered-on Neo and DJI RC-N3 or RC-N2, back out to the main DJI Fly screen.

STEP 2: Select Album

You can then choose to view Photos, Videos, or all content.

STEP 3: Press the checkmark in the upper right-hand corner to enter batch select mode, where you can either individually select files to download or batch select multiple files.

STEP 4: Select the files needed, then press the download button on the bottom right-hand corner.

You’ll see a progress bar and indicator letting you know the file(s) are downloading.

You can then access these files from within your phone or tablet editor or photo-browsing app of your choice.

Using Quick Transfer

The quick transfer feature allows you to wirelessly export content from your DJI Neo internal storage to an Android or iOS (Apple) smartphone or device, all without having to power on the remote controller.

This is ideal for those who would like to quickly edit their photos or videos and immediately share them with family, friends, or on social media.

The items needed for the QuickTransfer feature:

  • DJI Neo (remote controller not required)
  • Your smart device/phone
  • DJI Fly loaded on the smart device

Note: If using a DJI RC2, currently you cannot use the QuickTransfer feature to export photos and videos to the remote controller. The RC doesn’t have editing functions, so transferring content is not supported. Editing needs to be done on an Android or iOS smart device

To use the QuickTransfer feature:

Step 1: Remove the gimbal guard and power on the Neo.

Step 2: Open the DJI Fly app

On the left of the Home Screen, you will see DJI-NEO-XXXX detected; CONNECT. Tap the Connect box.

Step 3: After pressing Connect, DJI Fly will ask to connect to the Neo network. Press Join.

The Neo will then connect. You will then be brought to the DJI Neo Home Screen.

Note: If you have never connected your Neo to do a Quick Transfer, you will be given detailed instructions on how to connect the Neo.

Step 4: Press the back button at the top of the Neo Home Screen to get back to the DJI Fly Home Screen.

Step 5: Once in the DJI Fly Home Screen press WiFI Devices – Neo Connected. This will give you the option to View the Neo Album or Control the Neo.

Choose View Album to see the content on the DJI Neo internal storage.

You can then choose to view Photos, Videos, or all content.

Step 6: Press the checkmark in the upper right-hand corner to enter batch select mode, where you can either individually select files to download or batch select multiple files.

Select the files needed, then press the download button on the bottom right-hand corner.

You’ll see a progress bar and indicator letting you know the file(s) are downloading.

You can then access these files from within your phone or tablet using the video/photo editor or photo gallery of your choice.
