International Girls in ICT Day is the ideal time to shine a spotlight on the technology industry and encourage and inspire girls and women of all ages to explore a wide range of career opportunities—those they may not have previously considered—in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
This global initiative, led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will be held on April 24, 2025. It’s something I’m personally incredibly passionate about—let me tell you why!
Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation
Despite some progress, the gender gap in tech remains significant. Women represent only 25 percent of the tech workforce. Meanwhile, an even smaller percentage—just 11 percent—are in executive roles.*
The trend continues on a broader scale. Across the global STEM workforce, women comprise only 29.2 percent.** This is a missed opportunity for us all.
At Cisco, we know the value that different perspectives bring to business, and we are committed to having more women’s voices help to shape the future of technology. This has never been more important as we look toward the fundamental shifts that the widespread adoption of AI will create.
Celebrate International Girls in ICT Day with Cisco
This International Girls in ICT Day, we’re embracing the power of standing out to make a difference.
In an upcoming broadcast, my colleague Natalie Jones-Owen, Director of Service Provider Sales, and I will share our personal stories and insights from our journeys as women in the tech industry.
We’ll discuss the importance of mentorship, the excitement of embracing change, and the critical role of inclusivity to ensure AI represents and speaks for the whole of society. There is still a widespread perception that STEM careers are better suited to males, and that’s why initiatives like Girls in ICT Day are so important–to dispel those myths.
Inspiring a new generation of tech leaders
Indeed, my own path has been one of defying expectations and following my passion. My family encouraged me to pursue engineering, despite that decision meaning that I would be part of a tiny minority in my cohort. It’s a story of perseverance and determination that I hope will inspire others to forge their own paths in technology.
All Voices, One Digital Future: Empowering Girls of Every Background
The broadcast on April 24 is more than a conversation; it’s an invitation. We want to inspire you to see the possibilities that arise when women are empowered to lead and innovate. Whether you’re a young woman considering a career in ICT, a mentor supporting the next generation, or an advocate for diversity, this conversation is for you.
Join us as we come together to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day to inspire and empower the future leaders of technology, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be part of this transformative journey.
Let’s break barriers and build an inclusive digital future—together.
