Google Cloud partners with Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone Italy on AI and cloud transformation

Google Cloud is expanding its telecom partnerships with Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone Italy, focusing on AI-driven network operations and cloud-based data modernisation.

AI-powered RAN optimisation with Deutsche Telekom

Google Cloud and Deutsche Telekom are working together to enhance Radio Access Network (RAN) operations using Google’s Gemini 2.0 AI model. The collaboration introduces RAN Guardian, an AI agent that autonomously monitors network conditions, detects anomalies, and reroutes services to improve network stability and efficiency.

“Traditional network management approaches are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of 5G and beyond,” said Abdu Mudesir, Group CTO of Deutsche Telekom. “We are pioneering AI agents for networks, working with key partners like Google Cloud, to unlock a new level of intelligence and automation in RAN operations as a step towards autonomous, self-healing networks.”

The AI-driven system analyses network parameters in real time, predicting and detecting disruptions. It can also recommend corrective actions, such as resource reallocation and configuration adjustments, to assist human operators in managing network performance.

“By combining Deutsche Telekom’s deep telecom expertise with Google Cloud’s cutting-edge AI capabilities, we’re building the next generation of intelligent networks,” said Angelo Libertucci, global industry lead for telecoms at Google Cloud. “This means fewer disruptions, faster speeds, and an overall enhanced mobile experience for Deutsche Telekom’s customers.”

Vodafone Italy modernises data architecture with Google Cloud

Vodafone Italy is overhauling its data infrastructure with Google Cloud, introducing a modernised, AI-driven platform known as Nucleus. The cloud-based system is intended to streamline data management and enable AI-powered analytics, supporting business-critical functions and operational efficiency.

Nucleus, created by Vodafone Italy’s engineering team, incorporates Google’s AI infrastructure, BigQuery, and an ETL framework to consolidate fragmented data silos into a centralised, real-time ecosystem. The migration, which took 12 months to complete, was carried out without disruptions to consumer or business operations.

“The Nucleus framework we developed fully harnesses the power of Google Cloud to create new value and transform our operations,” said Michele Bertoni, BI engineering and delivery manager for Vodafone Italy. “Together, we have greatly improved operational speed and adaptability, setting the stage to seize new opportunities, deepen our collaboration, and drive significant growth.”

A Google Cloud blog post on the collaboration highlighted Vodafone Italy’s progress, stating, “Vodafone Italy’s transformation journey exemplifies the power of the cloud in driving data unification, AI integration, and operational efficiency at scale.”

Both partnerships represent a larger movement in the telecom industry toward AI-driven automation and cloud-based transformation. Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone Italy are using AI and cloud computing to improve network efficiency, improve customer experience, and accelerate digital transformation.
