Chris Hadfield: The sky is falling – what to do about space junk?

We Live Science

The first Canadian to walk in space dives deep into the origins of space debris, how it’s become a growing problem, and how we can clean up the orbital mess

Out on a spacewalk, what’s the one thing every astronaut dreads? Believe it or not, the answer is – getting hit by space debris. This is because even small pieces of debris moving at high velocities can cause catastrophic damage to space suits, equipment, or spacecraft.

The growing problem of space junk takes the spotlight in this talk by Chris Hadfield, an astronaut, engineer, pilot, and the author of four bestselling books. Using his trademark storytelling and expertise, Hadfield dives into:

  • the origins of space junk, starting with Sputnik, and how it’s become a growing problem,
  • the various kinds of space junk that fall down from the sky on the Earth,
  • the risks this debris poses to astronauts, satellites, and the future of space exploration,
  • how satellite collisions and anti-satellite tests are turning space into a junkyard,
  • the solutions that could help us track, avoid, and even clean up our orbital mess.

Known for his humor, passion, and knack for making complex topics feel personal, Mr. Hadfield doesn’t simply explain the growing crisis of space debris – he shows us why it matters to all of us and what we can do about it.
