Samsung drives forward connected vehicle experiences

Samsung is partnering with Hyundai and Kia to enhance connected vehicle experiences through deep SmartThings integration.

Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, President, CTO of DX Division at Samsung Electronics and Head of Samsung Research, said: “Through our collaboration with Hyundai and Kia, customers will experience the convenience of SmartThings not only at home but also in their vehicles.”

One of the early features is a global location solution for vehicles and smart keys, leveraging the SmartThings Find platform. By harnessing Samsung’s vast network of Galaxy devices, drivers will be able to utilise Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to pinpoint vehicle locations even in the absence of cellular connectivity—hopefully ending the days of trying to remember where you’ve parked at large events.

Drivers will soon also be able to control their car’s air conditioning and check their electric vehicle’s remaining driving range directly from their Galaxy device’s Quick Panel. Furthermore, the integration of vehicles into the SmartThings ecosystem will allow for seamless control of connected home devices, such as air conditioners and air purifiers, while on the move.

The partnership has ambitious expansion plans including in-vehicle health monitoring via cameras and Galaxy devices, pet care solutions to optimise vehicle environments, and integration with smart apartment solutions.

Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division, said: “Our goal is to enrich Hyundai Motor and Kia customers’ mobility experience by offering personalised services that extend beyond transportation, seamlessly integrating vehicles with smartphones.”

This latest development builds upon a partnership announced in January, which focused on home-to-car and car-to-home services. The expanded collaboration now encompasses a broader range of SDV integration, including healthcare, pet care, and smart apartment solutions.

Partnerships like this between tech giants and traditional car manufacturers will become increasingly common to enhance and differentiate connected vehicle experiences. The Samsung-Hyundai-Kia alliance represents a step forward in the vision to create intelligent vehicles that seamlessly integrate with our digital lives.
