Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the Worst-Dressed of Them All?

YouTuber Kamo IO is a man after my own heart. As a Floridian, I consider shorts and flip-flops to be appropriate apparel for every possible occasion. Pants and shoes are about as appealing to me as fire is to Frankenstein’s monster. Kamo IO has this same sense of “style,” but we differ in that he does not think it is an entirely good thing. Knowing that he is hopeless on his own, he began looking for some type of help to become more fashionable. And as a techie in 2025, he naturally turned to artificial intelligence.

The idea he came up with was to build a mirror that can look him over, then critique his outfit before he heads out the door and embarrasses himself yet again. And just to keep things interesting, it does so with a sassy attitude. For example, in one demonstration, the system told him that he looked great…for staying inside all day. That was then followed up with some suggestions for a different look that might actually be helpful.

The build is fairly simple. An ESP32-CAM is pointed at the mirror to capture an image when Kamo IO stands in front of it. The image is transferred to a laptop, where it is processed and sent to one of ChatGPT’s multimodal models, along with a prompt directing it to assess the fashion choices of the individual in the photo with an attitude.

But how does ChatGPT know what makes for a fashionable look? Kamo IO had to give it some additional information to help it out. He did this by going to Pinterest. For those unfamiliar with Pinterest, he helpfully described it as a website with “a lot of fashion and stuff on it.” Spoken like a true techie! He found some images of styles he liked, then sent them along to the chatbot. The response is passed into text-to-speech software before being played over a speaker.

While the project would be pretty easy to replicate, you can save yourself a few hours and use this web-based app developed by Kamo IO. Or you could just stick with shorts and flip-flops, which is the obvious right choice.
