ESPN is launching a new, flagship streaming service this fall that combines everything you get from its network channels into one standalone streamer. Official details on the streamer are coming next week, but the name just leaked, and I think we all owe Disney a round of applause.
ESPN’s new streamer will be called “ESPN”
This fall’s new ESPN streaming service will differ from ESPN+, which has existed for years (and will continue as a separate product).
The new streamer will be the real deal of ESPN programming. Not a skinny off-shoot of secondary offerings. True flagship ESPN content, just like you’d get on cable.
And per Alex Sherman at CNBC, Disney’s team has nailed the name:
At long last, ESPN has chosen a name for its upcoming all access streaming service.
Ready?
It’s “ESPN.”
Yes, the flagship ESPN streamer will just be called “ESPN.”
Some may say that will be confusing. But I want to publicly state that I’m breathing a sigh of relief.
Maybe I’m just tired and felt anxious about the name reveal because of one too many HBO Go/HBO Now/HBO Max/just Max rebrands.
But you and I both know there were people at Disney trying to come up with clever-yet-unnecessary new names for the streamer. And just calling it ESPN is the dose of sanity and simplicity we all need.
Disney’s people seem to actually get that. Per Sherman:
ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro decided to name the application ESPN to simplify what’s become a cluttered streaming world, filled with different media products that can be bundled with other services at different price points
The name will officially be announced next week alongside a launch price, which is expected to be in the $25-30 range.
